I had never had a heated blanket. However, after the last House electricity bill, I decided to rethink the way I was keeping myself warm throughout the winter. There were three options – fireplace (which would keep me warm in the front room), heater (which in turn, would deplete my future kids college funds), or hibernation (dig a hole in the backyard and sleep through the winter, which I actually almost chose). Of course there were other options, such as equally as expensive electric surface heaters. Then I was cruising through Target and saw this electric blanket by Sunbeam (the slumber rest model in tan).

I bought a full even though I have a Queen size bed, because the Queen version was $30 more expensive. However, the full covers up the whole bed, which is perfect for me. The cord is nice and long, so it can stretch to wherever you need it. There are different ranges of heat, from ‘L’ (low), 1-9 (which are different ranges of heat), and finally ‘H’ (hot as heck). I put it to the test and put it on 9 while I got ready for bed and climbed into my toasty tomb. I woke up about 3am sweating. My fault there. My suggestion is to either turn it much lower before you actually pass out, or turn it off, because I woke up with my sack on fire.

The only downside I’ve experienced so far throughout a few weeks with my new Linus blanky is that it leaves tremendous amounts of fuzz on my Egyptian sheets. It’s annoying, but not a deal breaker – like a hot girl that talks. Hey, you deal with it.

RATING – BUY (if you’re cold and don’t want heater bills that are higher than Ricky Williams)

  2. Ignacio Says:

the blanket shipped super fast from dealyard. they sent the wrong color though. as soon as i told them- they sent the correct color. the king has a seperate controller for each side of the bed. there are 10 settings- L being the lowest.
it seems to heat evenly- but gradually gets hotter and hotter.
you can feel the wires- but we have it in between our covers- so it’s not a huge deal.
it takes a while to heat up to it’s max, but that’s a good thing- since even the L is too hot. i’m not positive it’s an actual slumberrest- since the packaging or the blanket didn’t say it anywhere, but it’s still the best purchase i’ve made for winter.
next time i’m getting one that can sense ambient temperature so it doesn’t get so hot.

  3. Greenleaf Says:

great electric blanket. Feels thin and flimsy but does an awesome job. Would buy again. Comfortably warm on those windy city nights.

  4. Vanderloo Says:

I’ll freely admit that I’ve been a foolish buyer. For the last dozen Christmas’s I’ve bought nearly that many different models of Sunbeam electric blankets. None of them are still in working order and according to the recipients of my gift, none lasted more than one season.

  5. Ernst Says:

I had enough faith in Sunbeam to buy 3 of these..we had this brand when I was young. I don’t like how ALL electric blankets wires are felt through the material. This blanket had an attractive weave on one side and a soft side. The only compplaint..is the dials are hard for ME to turn. I have a hard time with my hands and can’t grasp the dial to turn. It’s just the way the dial was made, it has smooth large notches but no nubes or ridges..I can probably put something on it so I can turn the dials but as it is, these were for the young people in the house and they are happy with them.

  6. Grace Says:

There definitely seems to be a problem with Sunbeam blankets.

I purchased mine (another model) a year ago, it worked that winter, and when I pulled it out this year it was just plain Dead.
Considering I spent a hundred dollars on it, and I really loved the blanket last winter, I was sorely disappointed by this event.

I emailed customer service three times and received three useless replies.

They wanted me to mail my King Sized, Dead blanket to Mississippi to be “Repaired”; shipping it at MY expense….can you say $45.00?
Now…I had a 50/50 chance of this blanket going in to be fixed (I am only in year two of my five year warranty)only to have it happen again after it was “fixed”. If I had to send it again to be “fixed” to the tune of $45.00, I’d have nearly bought a new one. I really did not want this blanket back, it is obviously defective in some way, or just bad by design…of which, I do not know. Somehow this just didn’t make sense to me and the odds felt very against my favor.

I truly had tried to get this blanket to work six times, as did my husband. I orginally bought it for him as we have sub-zero weather and it’s nice when he gets off at 6 a.m. to crawl into a heated bed after he’s half frozen. So you see, this was important to me to find a resolution to this problem. I even looked at other brands of blankets, but there are not many out there, it would seem Sunbeam has a cornered this market quite well, and what is out there, is three times as expensive. I…happen to think $100 for a blanket is exhorbitant, but with heat…well worth it. IF it works.

So I offered to spend ANOTHER $100 on a $200.00 Sunbeam blanket for a NEW one. And they said they didn’t do Exchanges…apparently the extra $100 wasn’t worth pleasing Me. Odd, I thought. So this time I emailed customer service and I asked to have my message forwarded to a Supervisor as the Customer Service responses were unacceptable at best. I informed them that I had posted EIGHT bad reviews on the internet and if they did not wish to accomodate me in some way, that I had all week to write Bad Reviews on their blankets. I also told them I was contacting Jarden, the parent company about this. One lovely Customer Service lady had the gall to tell me their products were excellent…really? Because MINE ISN’T and then I copied all the reviews from Amazon and sent them to her to prove that..no, they are NOT excellent! Here’s your proof on 75 reviews! After that email, I looked up the President of Jarden and got his phone number, I was prepared to call him on Monday morning.

Believe me…in this age, reviews are important!! If you buy something…leave a review! Even if you aren’t buying from Amazon, leave a review here! It makes a difference!!

    Now for the good part…

DON’T ACCEPT NO FOR AN ANSWER!! I’m glad I didn’t!
While I was shopping on Saturday, a very nice lady from Sunbeam called me to say she was going to assist me with my problem.
I was shopping after Thanksgiving and was standing in Best Buy at the time, and she offered to call me Tuesday.
Today is Tuesday, and she did as promised, she called.
She had all my information and emails, she asked for some numbers off of my blanket, and promised to send me shipping tags to mail my blanket back to them at their cost!! Yay, finally someone helpful!!

AND she ordered me a new blanket!!!!
I could NOT BE MORE PLEASED at this point! And I’m praying my new blanket will not have any problems.
But very happy that Sunbeam addressed my problem and made me happy! Now THAT is Customer Service!!!

So…IF you have a problem with YOUR blanket, contact Sunbeam. Don’t just eat the money you spent, your money is as good as mine is, and your product SHOULD WORK. I feel that Sunbeam did what was right by their product and as consumers we have a right to be happy with our purchases. A blanket with a five year warranty SHOULD WORK FOR FIVE YEARS right? If it doesn’t, they need to honor our purchase with a product that will work.

    Anyway…Happy with SUNBEAM!!!

  7. Magoo Says:

I just received my blanket yesterday, ordered it Sunday Standard shipping and received it in two days, nice surprise. I used it last night, and loved it, I enjoy a cold room with lots of blankets, love the weight of them. With this added warmth, and I just keep it on Low, it is perfect. I feel like I am spoiling myself.
    Great buy!

  8. Thornburgh Says:

Ionly bought this blanket because it presented itself with DUAL CONTROLS which is hard to find in a FULL. PICS were WRONG and i bought something that I DONT EVEN WANT NOW!!! I want a refund.

  9. Veals Says:

We actually received this item as a Christmas gift first, and then traded it in for the Ivy color (see review on the ivy item). Both are excellent items, and we would have kept this one except for the color. However, what I loved about it was that it actually worked really, really well. There are three heat settings, plus it turns off after 3 hours so you don’t have to worry about burning yourself or getting overly sweaty throughout the night. We actually DID save money on our power bill last winter (January was almost $40 lower than December!). It was pretty amazing.

  10. Hope Says:

I sent to a coworker as a gift, and she loved it. She said it was so nice that I am going to buy one for myself!

  12. Orellana Says:

This is my first electric blanket since childhood. That said, I am not sure what I was expecting.

Wires: I can feel the wires. In themselves, they don’t bother me all that much, but they seem to be spread out in the blanket sparsely.

Heat: It doesn’t seem to get or feel warm even when I jack it up to the highest setting. I read the troubleshooting and it said the following: “If the blanket does not seem warm, you should test it by folding a part of the blanket up on itself in a double/triple layer and wait a few minutes. Then put your hand between the folds to see if it is heating properly.” I tried this and indeed, it felt warm. So my work around for the lack on heat is to put the electric blanket in between two other blankets to create a sandwich effect. This works perfectly – very comfortable heat. (This might e dangerous since sunbeam tells you not to do it)

    * note: Sandwiching the blanket, or covering the electric blanket with another blanket is not recommended per sunbeams instructions. However, this is the only way I can get the blanket to create comfortable warmth.

    * note: Sunbeam makes it clear that the blanket will not be warm to the touch unless you are testing it with the sandwich effect. It will note feel hot to the touch like a heating pad – if it does, you have a defective item and you should send it back.

Fabric: I loved the herringbone stitch. It looks nice. However, since I have to cover it with another blanket, this is now a useless consideration.

I also am a big fan of the auto off after 10 hours feature. I am one of those people who fret over “did I leave the iron on this morning?” This auto off puts my mind at ease. Also note that the 10 hour timer resets back to 10 hours every time you change the heat setting. So if you go to bed at 9pm with a heat setting of 4 and wake up at 6am and change the heat setting to 7 to warm up before getting out of bed, the timer starts from 7am, not from 9pm last night.

I have no complaints with the shipper – I got my blanket within two days. I also did not bother returning this since I created my own work around, so there are no issues with customer service.

  13. Jarvis Says:

First off the dial doesn’t look ANY thing like the one I received on my blanket. It is not digital or anything. It’s a dial that is stiff and looks cheap and for some reason the picture has 2 dials when the blanket I received only has one. The blanket doesn’t get that warm either. I had a Sunbeam before this one and it looks like I might have to go back to it. I am disappointed with this blanket.

  14. Tanlioco Says:

The product is as advertised. I wish the king size were large enough for a California king bed.

  15. Eads Says:

I have only had this for about 20 min. I plugged it in and boom…. warm! I was freezing my rear end off and this thing now makes my bed so warm, its sexy. I didn’t want to get up but I just thought I had to tell someone how sexy this thing is. I think this is what the vampires have in all their coffins! YAY!

  16. Ubaldo Says:

I have purchased three Sunbeam Warming blankets over the last four to five years, and one thing is consistent…for the first year, it works like a charm. However, after the first year, the quality and consistency of heat begins to diminish exponentially.

I really never paid attention to the number of blankets I was buying, as I just would buy a new one if it was not heating properly. This year, I noticed that I have three queen sized heating blankets (one on the bed and the other two in bags that I have never gotten around to dropping off at GoodWill). Then it hit me, every 18 months, I am spending $139 for a blanket. Someone has to have a better quality blanket.

Next year, the blanket on my bed should begin to go out (as Sunbeam is SO consistant). So I will purchase another brand!

  17. Hansen Says:

LOVE this. Wonderful Invention of Automatic Cut off. Nice feel and look to blanket. Hopefully will use it for years.

  18. Hannaford Says:

Once again, I bought something based on price, and got something cheap.

Regardless of the fancy new controller, this is 1950′s technology, wrapped in a thin fuzzy blanket. You will be quickly warmed by uncomfortably stiff coils. You will grow to fear touching the COLD satin border at the top. You will get VERY tired of pulling bits of loose fuzz from your mouth all night. And you will find that loose fuzz all over everything that gets near this blanket.

If all you want is to stay warm for a cheap price, this will do it. A setting above 4 will absolutely ROAST you. I can’t imagine being anyplace cold enough to use setting 10.
