Even after washing with softener before use did not soften them. The pillow cover actually grated on the skin of my face at night while attending to my toddler and I cudn't wait to change it after a single night's use. I was expecting that though, as it seems to be the norm on character sheets (our Dora sheets are the same way). But, they match the comforter really well. And, most important my daughter loves them.
